Understanding Your IELTS Scores
IELTS Score Basics

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) measures your English language proficiency on a scale of 0-9, where 9 represents expert-level English ability. Your IELTS Scores Test Report Form (TRF) includes:
- Individual band scores for each section (Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking)
- An Overall Band Score (the average of your four section scores)

How Scores Are Calculated
Reading and Listening (IELTS Academic and General Training)
Scores for these sections are determined by the number of correct answers, which are converted to band scores:
- Reading: 40 questions total
- Listening: 40 questions total
Your raw score (number of correct answers) is converted to a band score using a conversion table specific to each test version.
Writing and Speaking
These sections are assessed by certified IELTS examiners using detailed assessment criteria:
Writing Assessment Criteria:
- Task Achievement/Response
- Coherence and Cohesion
- Lexical Resource
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy
Speaking Assessment Criteria:
- Fluency and Coherence
- Lexical Resource
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy
- Pronunciation
Overall Band Score Calculation
Your Overall Band Score is the mathematical average of your four component scores (Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking), rounded to the nearest whole or half band.
For example:
- Reading: 6.5
- Listening: 7.0
- Writing: 5.5
- Speaking: 6.0
Sum: 25 ÷ 4 = 6.25, rounded to 6.5 Overall Band Score

Score Validity
IELTS scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. This limited validity period reflects the fact that language proficiency may change over time if not actively maintained.
IELTS Indicator vs. Official IELTS
The IELTS Indicator is an online test introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic. While it follows the same format as the official IELTS test, not all organizations accept IELTS Indicator scores. The official IELTS test (paper-based or computer-delivered) remains the most widely accepted version.
Comparing Academic and General Training Scores
While the scoring system is identical for both IELTS Academic and General Training tests, they assess different types of English proficiency:
- IELTS Academic: Focuses on academic language proficiency needed for higher education
- IELTS General Training: Emphasizes practical language skills for everyday work and life situations
Getting Your Results
IELTS test results are typically available 13 calendar days after your test date. You can access your results:
- Online through the IELTS Test Centre portal
- In person at your test center
- By mail (if you requested this option)
Your official Test Report Form (TRF) will be provided in a secure format that includes multiple security features to prevent forgery.
Sending Scores to Institutions
You can request up to five free TRF copies to be sent directly to recognizing organizations (universities, immigration offices, employers) within one month of your test date. Additional copies may be requested for a fee.
Retaking the IELTS Test
There is no limit on how many times you can take the IELTS test. If you’re not satisfied with your scores, you can register for another test as soon as you feel ready. However, without additional preparation or language development, scores are unlikely to change significantly.
Requesting a Re-mark (Enquiry on Results)
If you believe your score doesn’t reflect your performance, you can request a re-mark of your Reading, Writing, or Listening components within six weeks of your test date. This service incurs a fee, which is refunded if your score changes.
